Een andere blik – Een gezamenlijke reflectie op transmediterrane samenwerking in de kunst
Tijdens deze Dare2Connect-bijeenkomst, georganiseerd door SICA i.s.m. European Cultural Foundation wordt ingegaan op vragen over transmediterrane samenwerking in de kunst. ECF presenteert het rapport ‘An Alternative Gaze’.

Stel, je bent kunstenaar uit de Mediterrane regio en je wilt je kunst aan het Westen laten zien. Houd je dan rekening met de wensen van het Westen of ga je uit van eigen tradities en gewoonten? Kies je met opzet thema’s die goed liggen bij Westerse donoren en media - bijvoorbeeld: de positie van vrouwen? Of is het beter je niet te vervreemden van eigen thema’s en onderwerpen en uit te gaan van de sterke lokale elementen en van de belangstelling van lokaal publiek?
Zou een onderzoek naar de wijze waarop kunstenaars het beste bij hun omgeving kunnen aansluiten nuttige inzichten verschaffen? Kunstenaars als Walid Raad en Akram Zaatari bijvoorbeeld maken werk dat prachtig aansluit bij lokale beeldmaterialen. Of passen deze kunstaars ook weer vooral in een Westers stramien?
Bovenstaande problematiek kwam naar voren tijdens enkele bijeenkomsten belegd door de European Cultural Foundation in het Midden-Oosten en in Europa. Op deze Dare2Connect-bijeenkomst, georganiseerd door SICA i.s.m. European Cultural Foundation gaan Basma El Husseiny (cultureel manager en fondsenwerver, Egypte), Charlotte Huygens (curator Nederland), Diala Khasawnih (beeldend kunstenaar, Jordanië) en Nat Muller (curator, Nederland) op deze onderwerpen in. Tarek Atoui (multimediakunstenaar, Libanon) praat op afstand mee via een telefoonverbinding. Download hier het complete programma, en de biografieën van de sprekers. Dit is de derde editie van Café Mediterranée. In deze reeks informele bijeenkomsten nodigt Dare2Connect vooraanstaande cultuurprofessionals uit het Midden-Oosten en Noord-Afrika uit om de cultuur van de Arabische en de Islamitische wereld te onderzoeken. Special focus: presentation of the European Cultural Foundation report 'An Alternative Gaze’, on Euro-Mediterranean collaboration in the arts.
There is a general feeling in the Mediterranean region that cultural operators rely heavily on Western approaches when designing their projects, leaving aside local traditions–like story-telling for example–traditions that are inherently familiar to local audiences. Instead, certain topical themes, especially those that receive media attention, such as the position of women, are favoured. But do local audiences recognise themselves in such abstract ‘meta’ discourses as these, rooted as they are in an external perspective on the region, on trend-influenced perceptions from outside? Would it not be more productive to engage with issues and subjects that have a clear domestic resonance, that touch the hearts of people in the Mediterranean region, and not only Western audiences? And what does this all say about the relation between artists and arts organisations from the Mediterranean region and their European counterparts?
These and more questions will be discussed in the third Café Mediterranée, organised by the SICA and the European Cultural Foundation. An Alternative Gaze, a new ECF publication on Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in the arts, will be launched prior to the discussions. The book presents the fruits of the ECF’s Mediterranean reflection process which took place in 2006 and 2007. Among the speakers are participants to this reflection process, such as Basma El Husseiny (Cultural Manager, Egypt), Charlotte Huygens (Curator, The Netherlands), Diala Khasawnih (Artist, Jordan) and Nat Muller (Curator, The Netherlands).
